I think I've worn the same style of make up since age seventeen. Disliking wearing over the top eyeshadow and colourful glittery things on my face, (I leave those for my accessories) I've used the same slick of black eyeliner with little kitten flick and coating of black mascara for so long that I think if I even contemplated trying to do anything else, I'd mess it up completely. In fact, because of the over use of black eyeliner, one of my relatives decided to let me know that I reminded her of Amy Winehouse. Note her words were more along the lines of, 'you remind me of Winehouse, not just the black eyeliner, but a little in the face too' I still don't know whether that was a compliment or slight dig concerning her drug addled appearance (maybe I looked tired that day). However despite my repetitive make up routine, when reading any fashion magazine or skimming through websites
looking for models to draw, I nearly always get drawn to the beauty section. Maybe it's because I mostly draw portraits, but new make up trends and hair adornments always end up saved in endlessly unkempt files in my computer. My favourite make up trend of S/S 2013 was definitely Chanel for Couture Week. The mesh eyelashes the artists used, along with lashings of black eyeshadow to turn the models into what Vogue calls 'Gothic fairies', made my inner goth squeal with delight (inwardly, because a goth wouldn't show that much emotion, obviously). I liked the similarly dark look shown at Jean Paul Gaultier, as well as the freshness of the Valentino make up palette. Find more images of the shows here or take a look at photographer Phill Taylor's make up GIFS shot with the girls from Grazia on his blog - they're brilliant.
